NATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM IN ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY AND MEDICAL GEOLOGY (PGAGEM)
GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM
The NATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM IN ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY AND MEDICAL GEOLOGY (PROGRAMA NACIONAL DE PESQUISA EM GEOQUIMICA AMBIENTAL E GEOLOGIA MEDICA - PGAGEM), coordinated by Servico Geolögico do Brasil - CPRM (Brazil Geological Service - CPRM), through the Departamento de Gestäo Territorial (Territorial Management Department), subordinated to Diretoria de Hidrologia e Gestäo Territorial (Hydrology and Territorial Management Board of Directors) was created as a multinstitutional, interdisciplinary and multiuse results program. It was elaborated by researchers of the Servico Geolögico do Brasil - CPRM (Brazil Geological Service - CPRM), Universidade de Campinas - UNICAMP(Campinas University), Universidade do Estado de Säo Paulo - USP (Säo Paulo State University), Universidade Federal do Estado do Parå - UFPA (Federal University of the State of Parå), Universidade Estadual de Londrina - UEL (Londrina State University), Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto - UFOP (Federal University of Ouro Preto), Minerais do Paranå - MINEROPAR (Paranå Minerals), Instituto Evandro Chagas (Evandro Chagas Institute), Instituto Adolfo Lutz (Adolfo Lutz Institute), Escola Nacional de Saude Publica - ENSP (National School of Public Health), FIOCRUZ and Empresa Brasileira de Agropecuåria - EMBRAPA (Brazilian Agency of Agricultural Research -Soils).
Among the main objectives of the program, there stands the accomplishment of environmental geochemistry survey projects, in partnership with the other institutions that make up the PGAGEM, aiming at supplying subsidies to the public health all over the Brazilian territory, through the analysis of samples of water, soil, river and lake bottom sediments, in order to identify the presence of elements and compounds that are essential or harmful to human or animal ingestion, such as: Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sc, Sn, Sr, Ti, V, W, Y, Zn, chlorides, fluorides, sulphates, nitrates, nitrites, organic and inorganic compounds. In case these elements and compounds are detected in a harmful quantity, their effects over the local population will be assessed by means of clinic diagnosis and laboratory analysis (blood, urine and hair).
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF PGAGEM
Complementing the first objectives, here are some of the other goals of PGAGEM:
subsidize planning actions of Agencia Nacional de Aguas - ANA (National Water Agency), of hydrographic basins committees, and of the environmental agencies both at federal, state and municipality levels;
identify focal points for industrial, agricultural and domestic pollution, both in rural and urban environment;
identify and characterize contamination plumes in surface waters and groundwaters; detect mineral deposits;
detect and characterize variations in the lithological composition in the areas studied;
detect and characterize natural or anthropogenic variations in the composition of water, vegetation and soil covers.
Alongside these goals, that are inherent to the program, other objectives refer to the improvement of professionals technical qualification, by means of post graduation or training courses on the job, as weil as the organization of events (workshops, symposia, congresses) aiming at the dissemination of this vital integration (for Brazil) between the physical environment study and Medicine (Public Health), both in the academic world and in society as a whole.
BENEFITS
Data and products generated by PGAGEM will allow the Brazilian society to count on socioeconomic benefits, such as:
decrease diseases from water, food and endemic transmission and origin, and those connected to the excess or lack of chemical elements in the organism affecting both human and animal population (livestock);
• optimize the direction of investments made by the hydrographic basin committees and by government projects related to the Public Health and to the preservation and correction of environment quality.;
contribute to the regional assessment of the environmental degradation in the country, subsidizing government projects such as GEO-BRAZIL (from IBAMA) and the ZONEAMENTO ECOLÖGICO E ECONÖMICO - ZEE (Ecological and Economic Zoning), both from the Ministry of Environment,
subsidize the rationalization of investments to be made in the prevention and correction of environment impact in the private sector productive activities (mining, agriculture and livestock farming);
contribute to the improvement and preservation of life quality in rural and urban communities .
PARTNERSHIPS
Partner institutions communicating via Internet, through the open net called REDE DE GEOQUIMICA AMBIENTAL E GEOLOGIA MEDICA-REGAGEM (Environmental Geochemistry and Medical Geology Net) (regagemOige.unicamp.br), are developing the program, counting on 250 researchers from various organs. Besides, the participation of other researchers are also foreseen, mainly from the planning, health, environment and water resources areas, as weil as researchers related to hydrographic basin committees, universities, Non-Govemmental Organizations - NGOs, or any other entity displaying a fair interest.
The NATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM IN ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY AND MEDICAL GEOLOGY (PGAGEM), includes low density geochemical mapping and other works to be executed by the Servigo Geolögico (Geologicat Service) in a period of 4 (four) years, with
an estimated expenditure of R$ 5 million (five million reais), including contributions from local projects executed by other institutions.
Projects, theses (Master courses and PhD), events and bibliography related to PGAGEM are becoming available in the page to be found at www.cprm.qov.br.
