Laura received her Bachelor of Science and her Master of Science degrees in Geological Sciences from the University of Florida in 2006 and 2008, respectively. In 2012, she completed her PhD at Duke University in Earth and Ocean Sciences. Dr. Ruhl accepted an Assistant Professor position at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) in the Earth Science Department in the latter part of 2012. Laura became interested in medical geology early on in her academic career, and attended several short courses and meetings on medical geology.

Her research interests include environmental geochemistry, isotopic geochemistry, medical geology (environment and health), and chemical mineralogy. The Ruhl lab focuses on environmental geochemistry with special emphasis on water related issues. Some of the research projects include water chemistry associated with energy resources, development and application of environmental isotopic tracers, health issues related to water chemistry, and medical geology issues related to human stone growth. Laura teaches a variety of classes in her research specialties including hydrogeology, geochemistry, and environmental geology to undergraduate and graduate students. She is currently working at teaching a medical geology course at UALR.

Elected to the position of General Secretary of the Association in August 2013.
