Birgitte Hansen is a senior scientist, PhD at the Department of Groundwater and Quaternary Geology
Mapping at Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland - GEUS in Aarhus, Denmark.

She got her Master degree in hydrogeology at University of Aarhus, Denmark in 1993 and completed
her PhD in hydro-geochemistry in1997 also at University of Aarhus. During her master studies she
was attending 4 month at Université-Aix-Marseilles II, France. As part of the PhD study she was half
a year at Department of Land, Air and Water Resources at University of California in Davis, USA.
After her PhD she held a scientist position for 4 years at the Danish Institute of Agricultural Science,
Research Centre for Organic Farming at Foulum in Denmark. Subsequently, she has been working 5
years in the Groundwater Department at the County of Aarhus, Denmark, and for the last 6 years she
has been working at GEUS.

Birgitte Hansen’ fields of research include environmental assessment of agricultural nitrogen
pollution, inorganic groundwater chemistry and hydro-geochemistry, statistical trend analyses, dating
of groundwater, nitrogen reduction processes in groundwater and assessment of nitrate vulnerability.
She is involved in the Danish groundwater monitoring program (GRUMO) and groundwater
monitoring in agricultural monitoring areas (LOOP) as well as the Danish groundwater-mapping
program. Integration of different data types and synthesis of knowledge are main fields of research.
Research interest under the frame of medical geology includes specifically iodine and nitrate in
drinking water and human health.

She is an external lecturer in groundwater chemistry at Geosciences, Aarhus University, a member
of the Danish board of ATV soil and groundwater, and member of the EU Working Group C on Water
Framework Directive Common Implementation Strategy.
