To recruit more members for Taiwan Chapter of IMGA, we took a web-based strategy. We sent out an invita-tion letter, explaining the visions, goals, compositions, current members, membership benefits and obligations, to the science grant holders related to medical geology from National Science Council, the major research funding agency in Taiwan. In fact, our new recruited member, Dr. Shih-Chieh Chen, Chair of Department of Anatomy in Kaohsiung Medical University, is honourably invited to give a talk in 7th Conference on Metal Toxicity and Carcinogenesis on Oct 21-24, 2012 at New Mexico, US.
IMGA Taiwan Chapter Newsletter
Medical Geology is an emerging science dealing with the relationships between geological factors and health. It explores the impacts of geologic materials and processes on human health. Our environment affects our health and to understand the complex relationships between environmental and health, collaboration of profes-sionals in many fields including medicine, geology, epidemiology, pathology and spatial analysis is required.
Message from the Chairman
The IMGA Taiwan Chapter will hold an annual meeting (including conference) every year. The first one was held on May 29, 2012 in the International Conference Center of NCKU, Tainan, Taiwan. I would like to ex-press my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended the conference and extend a special thank to the presi-dent of IMGA, Professor Jose Centeno for attending the meeting. A big thank-you goes to the invited speaker, Professor Chen-Jen Chen, and also to those domestic natural scientists and medical scientists and their re-search team members. I invited many scientist and professors of different specialized fields. I hope to combine the fields of “medicine”, ”geology” and ”hydrogeology” to find out the relationship between them in order to better improve our living environment and reduce any environmental epidemics.
This newsletter contains some new messages of our Chapter progress and research team’s achievements. I sin-cerely hope we could share these outcomes with you. You are also welcome to provide us your research results and any suggestions on our Chapter.
With best wishes,
Jiin-Shuh Jean, President of IMGA Taiwan Chapter

The week of May 28-31, 2012, Dr. J. Centeno, IMGA Chair, will be in Taiwan meeting with members of the Taiwan Chapter on Medical Geology and presenting invited lectures on medical geology at the Medical Col-lege of the National Cheng Kung University (May 28, 2012), at the First Annual Meeting of the IMGA Taiwan Chapter (May 29, 2012) and the Academia Sinica in Taipei on May 30, 3012.
Report from Chapter Leader Professor Jiin-Shuh Jean
The Taiwan Chapter is very active and has 30 members and one group member. The majority of these are en-vironmental scientists and a few medical professionals. The Chapter has organised several meetings to date including preparing for the establishment of IMGA-Taiwan, June 21, 2011 and June 28, 2011.
The inaugural ceremony of the Taiwan Chapter, IMGA was held on 12 July 2011 in the International conven-tion center of National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan. There were about fifty Taiwan members and nonmembers in the general assembly. During the opening ceremony, the chairman Jiin-Shuh Jean in-vited the vice president Hung Sheng Yen, Dean Andy Fuh of theCollege of Science and Dean Chi-Her Lin of the College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung university (NCKU) to offer welcome addresses.
We also invited our distinguished guest Professor Kim Dowling (Ballarat university, Australia) to provide a welcome address. After that, she gave an hour’s lecture on ”Medical Geology: A multi-disciplinary response to the issues of a complex world”. Her lecture drew the attention of the audience to an understanding of medical geology. During the coffee break, we had group photos.
After the break, we had a business meeting, in which we elected 9 director councilors and 3 su-pervisor councillors listed below:
