Advances in Arsenic Research:
Integration of Experimental and Observational Studies and
Implications for Mitigation
Sponsored by the Division of Geochemistry (GEOC)
and the Division of Environmental Chemistry (ENVR)
at the 226th ACS National Meeting
New York, NY
September 7-11, 2003
The discovery in recent years of numerous water supplies worldwide affected
by arsenic at concentrations above acceptable health levels has prompted a plethora
of research directed at understanding the occurrence, distribution, and mobilization
of arsenic in the environment, and spurred the development of cost-effective
treatment technologies. This session will focus on bridging the gap between
different approaches and scales of investigation, and fostering a more unified
understanding of arsenic occurrence and behavior. Papers on arsenic-related
research encompassing geological, geochernical, hydrological, microbiological,
engineering, and ecological aspects are welcome, in particular studies emphasizing
the integration of basic research with mitigation and remediation strategies.

SECOND
CIRCULAR
3rd International Conference
on Trace Element Speciation in Biomedical, Nutritional and Environmental Sciences
10-13 May 2004
GSF - National Research Center for Environment and Health, Ingolstaedter Landstrasse
1,
D-85764 Neuherberg, Germany
The 3rd Speciation Conference will provide a highly qualified platform for all
activities in element speciation and will create a forum for open discussions
about very new and perhaps not fully established findings.
The Scientific Committee emphasises the aim to keep close to definitions of
chemical speciation by IUPAC .
Specifically species identification provides a strong link to methods and strategies
of organic analytical chemistry. Thus some fields in organic analytical chemistry
are now introduced in this conference. The scientific committee stress the aim
to get a closer exchange of knowledge and experience – especially in sample
preparation and analytical techniques – to increase the benefit for inorganic
and organic speciation as well as the discussions between these disciplines.
Organic analytical chemists are thus also invited to contribute to this conference.

Medical Geology: Relating Earth Materials, Environmental Health, and Human Health Risks
Topical session for the annual meeting of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in Milwaukee, WI from November 11-15, 2007.
Interest in the environmental chemistry and toxicology of contaminants is often driven by concerns over ecological or human health. Communication between health scientists, toxicologists, environmental scientists, and physical scientists is critical but often is lacking. The recent expansion of the field of Medical Geology, or Toxicological Geochemistry, has provided the stimulus for communication across these disciplines. This discipline recognizes and integrates the effects on human health of where we live (environment), what we ingest or inhale (water, soil, food), and physiological responses (disease). The symposium will bring together invited speakers whose expertise spans the medical, environmental, chemical, and earth science fields. Contributions are welcomed from investigators in areas such as: public health, environmental toxicology, environmental pathology, toxicological geochemistry, geoenvironmental epidemiology, medical mineralogy, and analytical methods. The goal of the symposium is to foster communication among these disparate groups and to work toward greater future interdisciplinary cooperation.
The success of this session is dependent on submission and acceptance of a minimum of 12 abstracts. The abstract submission deadline is June 1, 2007 at midnight. Additional information about the conference is available at http://milwaukee.setac.org. Abstract submission is available through the following website http://setac.abstractcentral.com

Iodine and Selenium anomalies in soils and Health
European Geosciences Union,
General Assembly 2008
Vienna, Austria, 13 – 18 April 2008
Selenium and iodine are essential trace elements for humans. Low intakes of iodine result in a series of problems collectively described as Iodine Deficiency Disorders, the most serious effect being mental retardation where infants have been deprived of iodine during foetal development and very early childhood. Selenium is an essential component of several proteins and enzymes one of the most important being glutathione peroxidise which is an antioxidant in the body. In addition, with regard to selenium, excessive dietary intakes can result in toxicity problems. It is thus essential to understand the sources and distribution of these elements in soil, and to gain insight into the controls on their bioavailability. To this end this session solicits contributions on both field and laboratory studies on sources and pathways of selenium and iodine into the surficial environment, especially in soils and into the the rest of the biosphere.
In this Session all works proceeding from both private and public organizations from any of the five continents related to the above topics will be considered for oral or poster presentation

4th International Conference on Trace Element Speciation in Biomedical, Nutritional And Environmental Sciences
May 25th - May 29th 2008, Munich-Neuherberg, Germany
Trace elements play an important role in the biomedical, nutritional and environmental field either as essential components e.g. in enzymes or as potentially toxic components e.g. in food or in the environment. The realisation that the determination of total contents is not sufficient for an adequate understanding of the function of trace elements led to the establishment of speciation analysis about 20 years ago.
Five International Workshops on Trace Element Analytical Chemistry in Medicine and Biology had been organized at the GSF - National Research Center in Neuherberg, Germany from 1980 to 1988 by P. Brätter and P. Schramel. The 6th workshop was organised by P. Brätter, B. Ribas and P. Schramel in 1994.
In response to the rising demand and research activities in the field of trace element speciation analysis the series of workshops was continued by a series of three International Conferences on Trace Element Speciation in Biomedical, Nutritional and Environmental Sciences at the GSF - National Research Center in Neuherberg, Germany. The organisers were B. Michalke and P. Schramel.

46th Annual Meeting in Billings, Montana
June 5-11, 2009
Symposium Title: "A drugstore in the dirt: medicinal clays and clay minerals"
Organizer: Lynda B. Williams, Arizona State University
This popular topic is making headlines but the integrative study of what makes ‘healing clays’ work is in its infancy. This session will focus on physical and chemical studies of the interaction of clays and clay minerals with human and environmental pathogens, parasites, viruses, fungi, or prions. Contributions to this session are sought from researchers in all related scientific disciplines with data on analytical methods, experiments, and field or clinical applications.
By identifying the ‘drugstore in the dirt’, clay mineralogists can make significant contributions toward living in a ‘Green’ (eco-friendly) society. Utilizing natural clay minerals for fighting disease, topical infections, promoting nutrition, relieving rheumatism, digestive disorders, drug delivery, food storage, protection and transport, anti-fungal building materials are among a few uses of clays that require better pharmacological understanding.

Session HE1 "Asbestos Monitoring & Analytical Methods"
Monitoring, identification, and quantification of asbestos are essential aspects of dealing with these minerals. These investigations are very important to the regulatory community because special precautions must be taken when asbestos are found in some milieus and their quantity is greater than a certain amount. They are also necessary to study several health troubles in humans and animals.
Different techniques of monitoring and analysis are necessary depending on where the asbestos are spread: air, water, soils, rocks, biological materials, asbestos-containing materials and their transformation products. Besides, for asbestos use in health-based studies it is useful to apply several complementary analytical methods.
This session would 1) to present the state of the art about monitoring and techniques actually considered the most suitable for the different kinds of milieus and materials where asbestos are present; 2) to compare various investigation protocols adopted; 3) to exchange information about the advances in this topic; 4) to develop interdisciplinary collaborations.
Convenors: Elena Belluso (elena.belluso@unito.it) and Mickey Gunter (mgunter@uidaho.edu)
Session HE4 "Characterization and Reactivity of Airborne Minerals and their Effects on Human Health".
Inhalation of mineral particles has been demonstrated to be the origin of specific lung problems that include cancer. Mineralogy of the airborne particles depends on several factors with a geographical component, as lithology, vegetation or climate. Asbestos (amphibole and chrysotile) induce mesothelioma and lung cancer; quartz induces lung fibrosis. Clay minerals may represent a risk, especially in dry regions or clay industry, where a high burden of particles may make difficult the clearance on the inhaled particles. The toxicity of airborne minerals is induced by their biodurability and chemical reactions occurred at the mineral surface.
This session is focus on 1) mineralogical and physico-chemical characterization of airborne minerals, 2) geochemical reactions (e.g., dissolution kinetics, mineral/organic substance interaction) and physico-chemical properties that control the reactivity of airborne minerals, 3) exchange of information between interdisciplinary approaches including biodurability, in-vitro and in-vivo interaction with tissues, and 4) development of interdisciplinary collaborations that help to understand the toxicity of airborne minerals and potential risks derived from inhalation.
Invited speaker: Dr. Jose Centeno from the U. S. Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Department of Environmental and Infectious Disease Sciences
Convenors: Pascal Dumortier (pdumorti@ulb.ac.be) and F. Javier Huertas (javier.huertas@eez.csic.es)

7th. INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON TRACE ELEMENTS IN HUMAN:NEW PERSPECTIVES
October 13th - 15th 2009
ATHENS – GREECE
The University of Athens (Greece), the University Cadi Ayyad of Marrakech (Morocco) and the Organizing Committee invite you to take part to the "7th. International Symposium on Trace Elements in Human: New Perspectives"
The rapid growth in importance of trace elements in biology and medicine needs the discussion of the recent developments in this field.
Nutritional and environmental investigations are essential to control the intake of trace elements in human. The role of the environment not only at the level of the pollution but also the influence of the common way of life (diet) on the intake of trace elements has to be evaluated.
Deficiencies of trace elements may have profound effects on the development, health and well being of human subjects. They may affect the human reproduction, the development of pregnancy and the development of newborns and young children. This constitutes a very important problem, especially in developing countries. Diagnosis of deficiency and the monitoring of individuals receiving treatment require the knowledge of both the trace element status of these individuals prior treatment and, in case of deficiency, the trace element requirements needed for restoring an adequate trace element status.
On the other hand, progress in trace element research depends very much on the use of appropriate methodologies and their progressive improvement. This session will form part of the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) 571 on radon and health, and is co-supported by the EGU.
3rd International Congress on Arsenic in the Environment
National Cheng Kung University, Tainan City, Taiwan on May 17-21, 2010
Arsenic in Geosphere and Human Diseases
The Third International Congresses (As 2010) “Arsenic in the Environment” with the theme “Arsenic in Geosphere and Human Diseases” will be held in Tainan, Taiwan, during May 2010. The congress series offers an international, multi- and interdisciplinary discussion platform for discussions on cutting edge arsenic research.
Hosting this congress in Taiwan makes it especially attractive, since here half a century ago, the endemic Blackfoot Disease was discovered, and related to the arsenic uptake from drinking water supplied by wells. This had made Taiwan an important area for arsenic research for the last 5 decades.
Session topics comprise: I. Geology + hydrogeology of arsenic; II. Ecological effects: Arsenic in soils, plants and food chain; III. Marine + terrestrial biota; IV. Health effects on humans: Epidemiology + biomarkers; V. Toxicological effects; VI. Assessment and remediation; VII. Analytical methods.
